New Orleans: Urban Resiliency, Recovery & Adaptation

The GREEN New Orleans Program analyzed rich history, unique culture, good food, great music, incredible people, and an inspiring story. It has been nearly 17 years since Hurricane Katrina impacted New Orleans, a resilient city built just at sea-level. This course provided wide knowledge of the unique history, culture, and climate resiliency that New Orleans has to offer. The program consisted of live speakers, educational tours, and site-visits including bayou and local neighborhood highlights. Participants were able to tour the neighborhoods where the historic Hurricane Katrina made the most impacts in the community and participated in a volunteer effort to plant native bottomland trees to restore Nola’s wetlands with a local non-profit. TGP participants were fully immersed in the culture of New Orleans through the rich history of jazz, museums, eclectic art, and much more. Students were able to gain a unique perspective on environmental injustices and challenges that residents of New Orleans face and learn how to do their part to help the local community overcome those challenges.
